In a lot of cases you may want to create isolated protected subspaces in your community, giving access only to specific sets of members. Be it an admin area, a VIP section or a class group, we got you covered!
To simplify the process, instead of adding same members to every section, we created an abstraction layer called Member Groups. With it, you can create a member group, assign members to it and then restrict access to specific spaces only to this group.
๐ก Note: we have limits on private areas numbers based on your plan. Number of member groups is unlimited.
A detailed process is outlined below and consists of three steps:
1. Create a member group
Open Member Groups page in your membership panel. There you will see the list of existing groups if any and a control to create a new group.

๐ก From this interface, you can also set visibility for the group badge (which will appear next to members' profiles in posts and comments) and modify the badge color.
2. Assign users to a group
Now open your Members List. On this page, you can use Add to groups drop-down next to each member to add this member to multiple groups.

3. Restrict spaces to member groups
This feature lets you specify which groups can access certain spaces.
Navigate to the Spaces page. There select which groups will have access to a space using theย Accessย drop-down. It is set to All Usersย by default and this makes this space accessible and visible to all community members. You can make it private by restricting access to any number of member groups or even making it admin-only.

If you'd like to separate members visually via badges, but not restrict access for different groups, skip this step.
4. Group Management Automation
Since we love automating your manual laborious tasks, we expanded Zapier member activation action with initial groups list for a member. And also created individual Zapier actions to change groups for an existing member. And we also have groups API for more advanced setups involving engineering.
